Need opinions on Zoloft...

Posted by Michelle on October 22, 1999, at 11:51:15

My shrink has prescribed me Zoloft but has left the decision to take it up to me. The reason I'd be taking them is due to a traumatic experience at work... long story. I want to know what other people have experienced, etc with this drug. Please email me @ fyregirl@rescueteam.com thanks! :)

I've known a few people who were prescribed Zoloft for some acute episodic depression and it worked fine for them, it helped them get out of the hole they fell into.

But is it more than that traumatic episode [don't feel like you have to spill your guts about it here if you don't want to =^)]? Were you seeing your therapist prior to this, or did you start seeing a therapist *because of* this event? The reason I'm asking is that the answers will affect the course your treatment should take. My first med was zoloft, and after six weeks of ups and downs and a lot of sugar-free hard candy (dry mouth! aCk!) zoloft was like a miracle for me. I truly had never felt better in my life. Then, after six months, I went off it. That was the singularly worst decision I have made in my life, because since then I have found nothing that achieves even half the initial response I had.

What I'm trying to say is yes, it may work fine for you. Different people respond in different ways to different meds, but I've known zoloft to do a pretty good job for depression caused by some life event or something traumatic. In my case, I've been depressed all my life and I needed to take a much more serious and thoughtful approach from the very start. If, you've been seeing your therapist for something prior to that traumatic event, you need to think about something a bit more long term than going on, feeling good for a month or two, then ending treatment.

Good luck
Bob

I've been off and on Zoloft for a few years now. The first cycle I took was great - 50mg. pulled me out of my anxiety/depression and I had no side effects after the first week. It was great! Follow up cycles after being off the drug for a year were less successful. However, tolerance does happen. Try it for 4 weeks - give it that long to work.
Best of luck and take care!
