I am not a doctor, but it seems you might have some "agoraphobia" (fear of being outside).
I think it is common in people with panic disorder, though I was not afraid to go outside when I had my really bad years of panic disorder. I was afraid that I would have a panic attack somewhere and that made me want to stay home.

But I had to go out and travel. I always used to take a sedative called Xanax (alprozolam is I think the other name for it) or Klonipin ("clonazepam") before I went out. These drugs are very calming and good for panic disorder--but can be addicting. Ask your doctor. Then things got much much easier when I began taking Zoloft (the drug that is related to Prozac).

Things that helped me ride on buses, trams, etc.:
--sucking on peppermint candy. Calming
--Also sipped ginger ale. Also calmmed me.
--Tried to sit or stand near door of bus/tram.
--Sat in "aisle seat " (not closest to window)
--Kept telling myself that I could get off before my stop and wait for the next bus if I needed to. But I hardly ever got off--just kept saying that I could get off until I got to my stop
--Listened to music on a "Walkman" while riding
--Read "light"not serious) magazines while riding.

I hope you see a doctor regularly for your medicine and for talking therapy too--that can help you a lot. Let us know.

. Also--you may want to go to:
www.allhealth.com/allhealth/boards. There are many message boards there. Under "Mental Health"--there is one for Panic/Anxiety and one for Agoraphobia (and for other things). I checked a couple of the boards out--they are not as technical as this board, but the people are very nice. I think you will find people to talk to about living with panic disorder there.
