Wellbutrin: How do I know if/when it's working?

Posted by jimbo on August 31, 2000, at 1:54:07

I'm 29 year old male and started taking Wellbutrin 8 days
ago. I had been diagnosed ADD in school, and had visited
a psychiatrist to discuss going back on it. Circumstancialy,
I had a few upsetting events around that point, which upset me.

Diagnosed w/acute depression, he suggested Wellbutrin; since it also
helps with attention. Here's the question:

I feel a little foggy, and not much better. Just different; more emotional,
less tempermental. So far, I'd say it all evens out. I'm wondering how dramatic
the effects could be? Will I know if it's worth continuing?

Thanks.

I would give it at least a month to 6 weeks. If you still feel crummy after a month or so, go back to the doctor and say it doesn't work.

I agree with Linda. Stick with it for at least 6 weeks. You may start to feel agitated, irritable, shaky, etc. That will pass. Then you may feel as though you are absolutely full of energy and want to run off to clean the entire house from top to bottom, wax the car, climb a mountain, paint the livingroom, swim the English Channnel, trim all of the hedges in your yard and then your neighbor's... I even mowed my neighbor's lawn. But, alas, that feeling goes away too. When this energizing effect wears off, don't think that your Wellbutrin has pooped out. It means it has JUST BEGUN to work. Keep a journal of your moods. Look back in 6 weeks and see where you are and where you were.

Also, visit the eGroups site on Wellbutrin for more info:

Good luck.

What dose are you on? You will want to start low and add on (with your doctor's blessing) if you don't start feeling something. Top recommended dose in the US is 400mg. I first augmented Remeron with 100mg of the Well, then upped to 200 (100mg tablet 2x/day), then 300 (150mg tablet 2x/day), but it wasn't till I got to 400mg (2 100mg tablets 2x/day) that I began to really feel better. My doctor decreased the Remeron as he increased the Well. Each dose increase may bring back the irritability and the energy. Again, those will pass. It took about 10 months or so before I was able to get to this point. Maybe you will be able to figure out your mix faster.
