HELP! I can't stop sleeping!

Posted by ItsJustMe on December 12, 2000, at 17:44:31

Hi!

I have been on 5 mg on Zyprexa for about a week now, and all I can do is sleep!!! Is this normal? How long should this last?

In a way it is nice, as I was suffering with insomnia on Risperdal (2-3 mg), but my heck, I am sleeping 16 hours or so each day (not necessarily all at once).

I use the Zyprexa to "boost" my Effexor XR (300 mg/ day) - I don't see any benefit yet - should I be feeling better by now or not?

Thx!

I see it has helped you get some sleep now but too much of it. I was experiencing the same thing having started seroquel (used to take risperdal, too)which is a similar sort of drug. I started at 50 mg. and was so tired all the time and wanted to sleep all day. I waited until 2 weeks of taking it and then lowered the dose to 25 mg. and am not sleeping as much now. That is about as long as I wait for the sleepiness to go away. I believe it can take longer to reap the full benefits like 3-5 weeks. That's just my experience, hope it helps. Your doctor, too, may have some good advice.

I take Zyprexa and don't have the sleeping problems anymore. I started at 7.5 mg and I'm now up to 10 mg. I take mine after dinner and have no problems with over sleeping. Zyprexa does come in a 2.5 mg tablet if you can try that dose for a week or two. If I am going to have my body adjust to a new side effect (like over sedation), it usually happens after two weeks.

If you can stick it out for another week or two please do. I have been very pleased with the reaction I have had to Zyprexa.

Also, Pfizer is coming out with a new med called Zeldox which is in the same family as Zyprexa. It is supposed to be out in the next couple of months and have fewer side effects than Zyprexa. You may want to mention this to you doctor so you know when it actually hits the shelves.

Good Luck,
CHris
