I have just started taking 900 mg of Nuerontin for mood swings. I am curious to find out if there are any side effects? I am particularly interested to find out if it causes weight gain. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello:
My personal experience on Neurontin was that there was no weight gain with it. It was a very pleasant surprise as I had put on weight with numerous AD's.Best of Luck to you,

Ditto. My pdoc said it wouldn't cause weight gain and it has not.

I wish. Actually, I think the 600mg at night does help me fall asleep, but I don't experience significant drowsiness, or at least not like what I experienced with Remeron. At higher doses of Rem, I had to be careful where I took it -- especially if I was driving home.

My doctor prescribed it to help me sleep (and secondary benefit of mood stabilizer)and I love it b.c. I fall asleep within 20 min. of going to bed and sleep through the night, but, unlike Remeron, it doesn't knock me out after I take it. I can stay up as long as I choose, it just makes me sleepy and able to sleep all night. With the Remeron, I didn't have any choice but to go to sleep 30 min. after taking it. I felt like a zombie. I hated it.

i have been on both neurontin and seroquel for several years and have consistently made changes in my antipsychotic to reduce weight gain...60 lbs total (30lbs in two increments)to no avail
my gain seems to have been corelated with dose escalations in my gabapentin / neurontin and is exercise and diet unresponsive.
i will be switching from gabapentin to tiagabine in an attempt to lose this weight... wish me success.
does my experience sound familiar to anyone?

My daughter takes this and has really gained a lot of weight. This is why I found your notes - I went searching to see if this is real or due to dietary mistakes. And she constantly fights fatique.

Oh, I am positive that neurontin made me gain weight, if only because there is a point after taking it where all I want to do is eat! Drowziness and a sort of euphoria are there too...

several doctors i have seen during the course of my treatment disagree or are unable to say which of the medications i am on (neurontin and seroquel) is responsible for the weight gain ...
seroquel, an antipsychotic, is almost definitely a contributing factor...many people gain weight while being treated with this agent.
but, fluctuations in my weight seem to correspond to changes in my dose of neurontin ... i have searched extensively and found that while many people don't gain with neurontin... SOME do.
and so i am researching several alternatives to both of my meds...each with less propensity to cause weight gain.
the characteristics of my weight gain ... the amount (60lbs), and its nonresponsiveness to diet and exercise ( do you share these same characteristics? ) have many believe that the antipsychotic is at fault ... at least one doctor told me that neurontin-based weight gain responds to exercise... but i am not convinced and so will see whether a reduction in my dose (of neurontin) and, finally, switching to another agent (perhaps gabatril) will trigger some weight loss.... we'll see.
