I just started taking Trazodone 100 mg at night and now I am up to 150 mg at night. Does anyone have any side effects from it? I know it puts me to sleep within 10-15 min and I sleep great. I am a little groggy in the morning but get out of it fast.
I saw that some of the side effects are pretty nasty.
Thoughts?

Hi.
Just my 2 cents for a sec here. I took trazadone... oh, about 3 years ago for about a year. I have been off of it 2 years.. because Of various surgeries.... and my doctor recommended it.
The clincher.... I had no clue this was even an AD. I thought it was just like....say.. unisom, ya know what I mean? So I didn't have any side effects. Could be because I wasn't looking for them, ya know?
Now I started taking an AD serveral months ago... found this and other forums... saw what could happen and they did. Is this a mind thing here or what????? Funny.
But to answer your question..... it worked well for me for sleep.... and I am debating on taking it occasionally for the bad insomnia nights again... not sure.
My doctor's make a huge joke to me..... "next time I prescribe you anything... you are not to research the side effects." Ha ha. Anway, your answer..... good for sleep, no side effects. For me anyway... everybody is different. Good luck. A little piece of advice? Stay off this board until you have taken it for like 2 months. Just kidding... I wish I would have done that. Good luck.

I have been on zoloft for two and a half weeks. I had always had some degree of insomnia with it, but the past few nights have been sleepless. I was so desperate I even tried marijuana to get to sleep, but it didn't work, even though it usually does every time.
My psychiatrist prescribed some trazadone. I took the first 50mg last night. It took a few hours to kick in but I did fall asleep. I'm not sure whether it was because of the trazadone or because the zoloft-induced insomnia wore off on its own. But trazadone seems like a pretty good sedative. I was very tired in the morning, almost to the point of being intoxicated, but it wore off quickly like it did for you. Throughout today I felt like falling asleep, but it wasn't bothersome. I also had some cognitive difficulties today, but I'm guessing that's just my brain adjusting to the trazadone. No other side effects so far.

Hi Joe,
Trazodone (Desyrel) is an antidepressant but nowadays commonly prescribed as a "sleeper." The usual dose to promote sleep is between 50-200 mg at bedtime. The smaller dose is tried first before going to higher doses.
As an antidepressant, trazodone should be prescribed between 300-600 mg/day. However, because of dose-related side-effects such as sedation that lingers through the day, dizziness, and orthostatic hypotension (marked drop in blood pressure upon arising), and the advent of the newer antidepressants, it has been relegated to its present role of a "hypnotic" drug.
The common side effect of trazodone is drowsiness. You should also be aware that dizziness and orthostatic hypotension can occur even in the smaller, "hypnotic" dose. And last but not the least (among men), among the antidepressants, trazodone is the one commonly associated with "priapism." This condition is characterized by a persistent and painful penile erection unrelated to emotional arousal. This is a medical emergency. If not treated immediately, could lead to impotency. Better be aware of this potential adverse effect now. Right? I don't think you want to learn about it the "hard way."
Finally, there have been anecdotal reports of "serotonin syndrome" developing with the combination of SSRI and trazodone.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I could never tolerate more than 50 mg.. apparently and for what reason I don't pretend to know trazodone is associated with the Lowest suicide rates of all antidepressants. It blocks the 5HT2 receptor which may be one serotonin receptor you don't want to stimulate and may be responsible for some of the side effects associated with SSRI's. Personally I never cared much for it, but it is definately anti-anxiety and good for sleep and currently the drug of choice for fibromyalgia. Just keep in mind Everyone is different.. for instance Zoloft Constipates me and Prozac makes me gain weight.
Good Luck
