Herbs or off the counter meds for ANXIETY?

Posted by adamie on November 25, 2001, at 17:20:30

Please help me decide what to buy regarding a non prescription med for anxiety. i wont be seeing a pdoc until the 29th and i am dealing with a lot of mind torture right now. i dunno if i exactly have anxiety but so far i have felt my best on meds which work for both anxiety and depression. on paxil I once actually felt like i may recover. then that ended.

also maybe there an anxiety med which may not be sedating, therefor i can take during early in the day to see if it negatively effects me or not? because most meds i tried i have felt a worsening effect.

also I take Chalomile tea to help me sleep. I dunno if it helps. Maybe a little. is chalomile safe to take when you have depression and anxiety? any harm to take it while taking some off the counter anxiety med?

hello, if your depression and anxiety is diagnosed as moderate to major, DO NOT use HERBAL remodies.
Just my opinion, i worked at a large vitamin shoppe in florida. Read alot and was up on all herbal pills, esp mind and body. The strongest for anxiety would be KAVA KAVA, i beleive 70-100% kavalactones, somewhere along that line. For Depression, 5htp and sam-E. For sleep, something like melatonin.
This stuff wouldnt touch my depression anxiety etc. even if i took the whole bottle.

Best anxiety pill - xanax (panic)
Second best pill - Klonopin (social Phobia)

Depression Celexa (least anxiety causing)
Zoloft ( may cause bit anxiety)

Remeron is good for both depression, sleep, anxiety.

Yet to try serzone!

my depression is extremely severe at times. but i want something to try before my next doctor visit. and my depression/anxiety has been made much worse by almost all the meds i tried. so maybe something natural can at least help a bit.

I have tried celexa. it actually seemed to cause much anxiety for me but i am not sure due to a horrific life event. anyway that med caused me to become suicidal so i had to stop it.

i am actually thinking of trying the remeron. so far things which work for also anxiety have had the least worsening effect and perhaps even helped a little. so maybe remeron can be good. if suicidal feeling return then i will try to get ECT again. this morning was pure hell.

The only real non-prescrip anxiolytic is benadryl

Benadryl is the only real anti-anxiety non prescription pill, although valerian or kava kava may help a little bit but not nearly as much as benadryl. The dosing is 50 mg, I think every 6 hours but be sure to read the bottle- buy the kapseals, they work the best & the fastest, & buy namebrand benadryl, not store brands.

Be forewarned, the ingredient in benadryl is also the main ingredient in otc sleeping pills (diphenhydramine hcl) so it is somewhat sedating & can affect your driving & working/cognitive skills- I ran into a telephone pole after I took a bunch of benadryl. Also, tolerance builds fast to benadryl & you can get hooked on it if you have a history of drug abuse/alcoholism.

I agree with Geno that the over the counter stuff is not as good as prescriptions. Kava did help me with anxiety. It generally works within about 30 minutes. I needed it the first few weeks on Celexa but then the anxiety went away.

*Why* not ask for a benzo like Xanax or Ativan????
The stuff is amazing, and you will feel 110 percent better at the first dose. REALLY...honestly NO med has ever touched the good this stuff can do for me. It MELTS anxiety, in turn easing depression.

Good luck....
