I take Valproic Acid capsules; I believe Valproic Acid is the generic for Depakote. Anyway, these large, soft, gel-capsules must be filled with some oil. After taking one, I end up getting very mild heartburn and when I burp, I taste an oil taste in my throat. Is this normal?

You may need to try the Depakote instead. They won't release the medication until they are in your small intestine. I have reflux problems as well and never had any trouble with either Depakote EC or Sprinkle versions--never tried the generic (uncoated) capsules. Thanks for letting me know about that!

my dr insised that I get the brand name insted of the generic depakote. she said that the side effets were not as severe as with the generic, but i too have been plagued with constant heartburn since i have started taking it, maylox quick dissolve talbs are a god send, they acctually do disolve quickly and dont leave a bad taste, work fast too. the heart burn is so severe that that I almost think that i'm having a panic attack! even if i watch what I eat!
good luck and best wishes!

Hi, they also make a Depakote ER version which only comes in 500mg tablets. It delays the peak absorption by several hours and recommends taking only at bedtime (500-1000mg). I haven't tried it because I don't need 500mg on a regular basis.
