A friend told me that today's radio news announced that Zoloft has become the first SSRI approved for Social Anxiety Disorder. I said no way, Paxil has made zillions on that indication. But she insisted.
I checked on the net and saw something to the effect that Zoloft is the first SSRI approved for *long-term* treatment of SP (as well as short-term). The article stated that Paxil was only approved for short-term treatment of SP...and that Effexor SR obtained a short-term-only indication for SP the day after the Zoloft announcement.
Huh? When I read the monograph for Paxil, I don't see "short term treatment of SAD"...it just says "treatment of SAD". They point out that no studies have lasted longer than 12 weeks (Don't quote me on the number), but that if it seems to be working, stick with it longer-term and monitor.
Is this all semantics? Is it just because Zoloft may have submitted a study that went, say, 36 weeks instead of 12?
This is all kind of wacky to me.
Anyone out there use Zoloft or Effexor for SP? For how long, and how did/is it working?

In reply to FDA Says: Zoloft for LONG-TERM Social Phobia?, posted by Rick on February 11, 2003, at 21:59:38
Hi , I was on Zoloft for 2 years for SP , in my particular case , when I start taking the ZOloft I had a severe SP , it helped me , but after 2 years I realize that this is not the way that I want to live my life , so Im looking for other options. I started Effexor XR , and Ive been on it for 15 days , I dont feel any remarkable change , but I going to give it more time.
This is the end of the thread.
