Med for Nardil insomnia?

Posted by Jumpy on March 22, 2003, at 21:53:27

Hey Everyone,

What is the best medication for nardil insomnia? Trazodone seems to reverse the antidepressant effect, ambien only works for 3 hours, benzo's you build up tolerance to. What have you found to help the insomnia of nardil the best?

Thanks,

Jumpy

How much do you take and when? I was on Ambien and Valium with Nardil and liked it, but if that doesn't work for you...
Benedryl also helps with this, it helped with Parnate insomnia too. Trazodone was useless for me.You will adapt to the drug and sleep better eventually.
If it gets too awful, cranking back the dose for a while may be nessesary. MAOIs can be a really rough blast as they rewire your brain, and you need to sleep enough. I'd be really cautious about anti-psychotics, I personally think they're a bad idea unless you're actually psychotic, but lazy shrinks love them as a Band Aid for everything. A little Risperdal to get a good nights sleep might be a nessasary evil, though. I'd be cautious about using it permanently, it could dull the fun of being healthy.
Hope this helps

I take 60mg of nardil all in the morning and 0.5mg of klonopin at night. With the ambien, it only lasted 4 hours, so I would divide the dose and take half at 11pm and half when I awoke at around 3 pm. But when I split the 10mg dose to 5mg, it didn't work. 10mg twice a night works perfect but my pdoc doesn't want to prescribe non FDA approved doses (20mg per night).

Yeah, I have tried 45mg, 52.5 mg (3.5 tabs) and 55mgs (3.75 tabs) to lessen the side effects. I definately sleep better, but my depression comes back 100% ... damn!

Yeah, I tried zyprexa once at 2.5mg and was in a coma for 2 day almost!! I won't touch the stuff.

Zyprexa is bad news, stay away from it. It can totally wreck your health. Try the Benedryl, if you get desperate talk to your doc about combining it with the Ambien. Ask, that's a potential lot of sedation.
The sleep thing does get better. Risperdal is the least of evils if you need to be put under- sleep deprivation can make you manic. I was on Tegretol with Nardil as a mood stabilizer and that really helped with sleep.

Benadryl is an antihistamine and should never be taken with an MAOI such as nardil.

MAOI's and antihistamines are a perfectly benign combination. I used antihistamines (with my doctor's and pharmacist's blessings) during the 4 or more years that I took Nardil and Parnate. Benadryl was the first choice by my pdoc for the treatment of insomnia.

I take Nardil 60mg and I exercise daily. The only time I ever have insomnia from the Nardil is when I don't exercise for two days or more.
