i started Parnate last week. First day 20mg today. i think i am just as depressed and significantly more anxious. Is this typical? Is Parnate like many other antidepressants in that it can often make you feel worse for awhile before it starts to be effective? i feel like ****.
So far it really resembles a stimulant feeling-- but more the come-down than the 'high'. i know Parnate is known for this, and that it can therefore cause anxiety at times. But in general, is it supposed to help with anxiety or does it aggravate it?
Thanks.

Last week? You must be patient and give it time to kick in--the general rule of thumb is 3-4 weeks. Standard dose is at least 30 mg. Your feeling worse is probably just a symptom of your own depression, not the Parnate. I've been taking this drug for many years. It has somewhat of a stimulating effect, which can cause insomnia in some people. Yet also does a good-to-excellent job at alleviating anxiety. If panic, anxiety, or insomnia, remain a problem, you can use Parnate in conjunction with one of the benzos like Klonopin.

HI cubbybear,
Glad your mental health is back to "normal" with parnate. Was wondering if your weight has stabilized? I know you initially gained some pounds, but you said you were underweight from not eating enough when depressed. I am so close to trying Parnate and don't need weight gain to be an issue. Do you think you are more social with Parnate? I have mild social phobia tendencies and am hoping it will help with this.
Keep us posted on your continued success.

I started taking it on March 4 in the depths of depression, when I was badly underweight (118 lbs.) . It kicked in after 3 weeks and now I'm back up to 135, which is the optimal weight for my height (5 ft. 5 in.) I still have a ravenous appetite and weight is still climbing a bit. This is clearly a sign that I'm feeling a lot better. Remember that everyone reacts differently to every drug. There's only one way for you to find out how it will affect you. I can't speak about social phobia since that ordinarily isn't a problem.

What you're feeling is completely typical. The first thing I notice when I go back on Parnate is a jittery, anxious feeling. It generally takes two to three weeks for me to feel my mood begin to lift. Give it a little time.
