I am having a really difficult time with Merformin (I think brand name Glucophage) for weight gain cause by meds. Two things..it makes me feel *horrible*...I am edgy, and it seems to have a real hyperglycemic effect..and causes horrible intestinal problems..and I just feel yucky! (Touch Wood) I have been doing well on my Prozac, and this drug comes along and ruins my mood....and just make me feel like crud. Should I just take a lower dose? Has anyone lost weight on just say 250mg 2x a day? (Average dose is like 850mg and more 2x a day.) Please help...I am feeling so well mentally...like my life is now changed for the good, (after 20 years!!)...but I gotta get this weight off..and I am and will exercise, eat right, etc. But even doc said Metformin will help, and I am almost 34, overweight with chance of diabetes...and don't want to die of a heart attack after I spent all these years and finally feel normal (I hate that word..but..'back' to what I used to feel like...a very happy, positive person who has a lust for live, love, dreams..etc..) like I used to, and good about myself. I actually love life now..I can say that..I was never able to say that..and I can. Anyways..any advice from users of metformin (glucophage?). Thanx,
Jay

Jay,
I think a low carb low fat diet might help the gastrointestinal problems. Check out the link Ethel Bassett sent me in Nikki's thread above. And here's a link I found after reading that one.

I don't have any choice about staying on for diabetes II, but I'm hoping there might be some ways to counter the side effects.

Thank you very much Dinah. I kinda feel 'banished' from the website, and it was nice to have you reply. :)
Best wishes...

I take Glucophage XR, as well, for prevention of diabetes. I only lose weight on it if I am exercising regularly. Otherwise, it does keep me from gaining weight, where otherwise, my meds and my sedentary lifestyle and what I eat would lead to weight gain.
It is a pretty hefty med, and I wouldn't think it would be prescribed primarily for weight loss. But if you are at risk for diabetes, perhaps that is why your doc prescribed it. Mine was prescribed by the endocrinologist after an oral glucose tolerance test.
I haven't had any of the SEs you describe, so I guess I am lucky. I don't know what to tell you.
I do think that my meds added to my weight gain, especially around the waistline, whereas in the past I had a relatively narrow waist and most of my weight was in the hips and thighs. They say that fat around the middle is associated with diabetes risk. From what I understand, the fat around the waistline tends to store hormones, which then leads to insulin resistance, which is what adds to the risk of diabetes.
All I can say is talk to your doctor. If the metformin was prescribed by a doctor who you don't feel can address the concerns, then consult a diabetes specialist (endocrinologist).
This is the end of the thread.
