prozac withdrawal

Posted by kcarol on September 3, 2003, at 13:37:56

I have been taking Prozac 20mg off and on now since about 1988. I was diagnosed with "situational depression" when my husband was diagnosed with ALS. This was a very difficult time as I was dealing with his illness and caring for 2 small children. After he died in '91, I went off Prozac, without incident, or none that I can remember. I started taking it again about 6 years ago. I had been having daily tension headaches for about 4 years, was caring for 4 kids ages 3, 10, 13 and 13+. It was another very difficult time.

Now, I am down to 2 kids at home, life doesn't seem too stressful any more and I don't feel like I want to take Prozac anymore. I don't like the way if makes me feel numb, and the sexual side effects suck! I was only taking it about once a week, and so I decided-on my own-that I would just stop taking it.

Well, now-about 1 1/2 months later I feel really strange. I was afraid of the worst-brain cancer, stroke etc. until someone told me that I might be experiencing Prozac withdrawal. After reading many postings here, I'm sure that's what it is. I have many of the described symptoms-dizziness, weakness, fatigue, depression, brain-fuzz, confusion, wobbliness, (anyone out there crave carbs? this is not like me!)

Now, my question is-what do I do? Do I just wait it out or do I go back on Prozac and wean myself further. If so, how much and how often? Thanks for your feedback.
