Lexapro side effects

Posted by jnic on March 6, 2003, at 23:58:52

I have a question to throw out there to this online community...I've been taking Lexapro for a relatively short time now, and have been experiencing some side effects. I am wondering if any of you have experienced them. I'm taking .5mg - obviously a very small dose, but I'm extremely sensitive to drugs. At .10 mg I get drowsy, a side effect my doctor says is uncommon. I have been getting an upset stomach in the morning and probably wouldn't eat, if it were not for my blood sugar problem. But the biggest problem I am facing is hair loss. Wouldn't you know it, I've taken drugs that had this as a reported side effect, and it didn't affect me, but a drug that is known to have few side effects, is giving me trouble in this area. It took about 2 weeks for the med to titrate up into my system and then the other morning; bam, I was pulling out a lot (for me!)of hair in the shower. This has me worried because I lost some hair from taking Wellbutrin/Effexor in the past, and when I got off of it/them, the hair loss stopped. However, unfortunately for me, the lost hair never grew back. I'm female and well, vain, but in a private way and this is definitely a dealbreaker! I can't deal with this! I've got a lot of hair, but if this keeps up, I'm not going to...Has anyone experienced hair loss on Lexapro? What about on Wellbutrin? I am already taking Selenium for the lost hair, but suggestions for hair regrowth are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

We are all so different. I was losing hair on Celexa, couldn't tolerate Wellbutrin partly because of hair loss but-----no hair loss on Lexapro. Go figure. I wasn't looking for that benefit when I switched from Celexa to Lex but got surprised. All the benefits I was looking for (ex. sse--no benefit; tiredness--no benefit; apathy--no benefit.)

I think just about any psychiatric drug, as well as many other drugs, have the potential to cause hair loss. I know Paxil did for me. On Paxil I would clog the shower drain with hair every day. There is no way to predict which drugs will cause our hair to fall out though. We're all different.

Here's something interesting. I became interested in an herb called Rhodiola Rosea. It's because it was said to be a good antidepressant, antianxiety, good for the heart, etc etc. Great herb. So I take it every day now, though just a small dose. Since starting it, I have noticed that when I am done with a shower there isn't even one single strand of hair in the drain screen. Wow!

My meds are Prozac plus Zyprexa plus Adrafinil. Before adding Rhodiola Rosea, I was losing hair in the shower every day. Not a lot, but enough to notice. Rhodiola completely, and I mean completely, halted any hair loss caused by any reason.

If interested, only go for a brand that specifies 4% Rosavin content.

Hi,

I'm a new member, and a friend of mine sent me this post, because she and I are Hypothyroid, and are losing hair pre and post meds. Could you please answer these questions...Are you sure that it was this herb that helped you? Did you stop and the loss started up again? How long did it take for you to stop the loss, and which brand and how much did you take??? On an empty stomach??? Sorry for the questions, but it's so exciting!!!!

Thanks!!
