Time to stop

Posted by fremmons on December 10, 2003, at 5:08:26

Tomorrow I will have my annual physical. I have a very supportive, though not always especially well informed on this subject, doctor. I have been on Effexor for 6 or more years for depression/anxiety/chronic pain and have experienced virtually all the side effects described in missed dosages and the lethal malaise that accompanied my several attempts to withdraw. Apparently there are several drugs that can mitigate withdrawal symptoms, from OTC dramamine to herbal preparations to other prescriptions. I would happily learn of anyone's successful weaning, and of any substance (legal, that is) that may have aided in the process and how it aided. Thanks, and wish me luck.

I don't really have any good suggestions for you for going off your med. Have you considered a med switch? Maybe another AD would treat you better? Posting to the alternative board, if you haven't already, may yield you some suggestions from some with experience.

Most here have had their difficulties with meds, I'm included in that group.

I do know you need to process slowly to try to minimize the discontinuation syndrome.

Good Luck to you.

Hi fremmons, your doc should gradually taper you down from your current dosage. Don't stop cold turkey. Even by doing this, dicsontinuation effects can occur. Once completely off the drug, I took Prozac for about three days and it cut them immediately. Try Benadryl for the flu-like symptoms. I couldn't believe the difference (I had stopped taking Effexor once before and just waited and suffered.)

Good luck,
