A mood disorder is a type of mental illness...others types are anxiety disorders (like panic attacks), personality disorders, and schizophrenia, etc.
also mood disorder describes "severe disturbances of emotion" (from my psych 101 text). mood disorders are depression (extreme lows) or bipolar disorder (extreme highs and/or extreme lows).
