**pLeAsE**pLeAsE** Tell me about Zonegran

Posted by redscarlet on January 12, 2004, at 22:32:52

My pdoc changed my mood stabilizer today. He took me off Topamax (I've been on this for 2 1/2 years) and put me on Zonegran. I've had (VERY BAD) hair loss the entire time on Topamax. I even take the vitamins to help with this every day but it did nothing to stop or slow it down for me but because it was working other wise I stayed on it. I had tried MANY , if not all the other mood stabilizer. In fact I was on Lithium when I had to go into the hospital once for a month, and they say Lithium is the "Gold Standard" of mood stabilizers , well it wasn't for me. Well I just want to know what other people have experienced with Zonegran, the good the bad the ugly! ....what ever you got! And does anyone have any hair loss on this med, so far I don't see anything about this but that was the same with the Topamax too at first. Thanks for any info you've got... :-)

Hi,

I was on Topamax for 4 months and I did a lot of research during that time. I got a nasty side effect of hair growth- not severe but slowed down and almost stopped by now. Anyway, at one time I considered Zonegran but when I found out it was also an anti-convulsant I decided against it. But at the same time Topamax is known to have more side effects than Lamictal, Neurontin.

Most anti-convulsants cause hair loss and have androgenic properties(that cause hair loss, hormonal imbalances). I used to take lithium for BP but am off now when the doc discovered I had more of an anxiety problem rather than a mood problem.

Anyway, I read the boards here a lot and for BP I mostly read about Lamictal, Lithium, Topamax, Neurontin, Depakote, Zyprexa. Searching around a bit can help.

This is a really good website that has several articles from reputable sources about medications:

www.qualitycounts.com

Go to the search button and there's stuff on several different meds.

best of luck to you,
Sara
