Selegiline Approval

Posted by Existent on February 25, 2004, at 16:00:12

I am very excited by the prospect of the skin patch approval because I have used MAOI's in the past and that was one of few drugs that really helped, but one of the side effects, an elevated and erratic pulse rate prevented my continuing. A not threatening version MAOI, Moclobemide, is not available in the US. The extraordinay glowing descriptions of patients response make me eager to try. Lot's of people seem to have negative estimates for public release dates for feat that the FDA will be unduly influenced by competitive drug companies who don't want a new drug on the market. Is there anyone out there among you who has a rational comment on when this drug may be marketed? Does anyone know where the trials are taking place? I note that Florida, where I live, is one of theses places. How do I find out and how do I apply if possible?

Does anyone know why Selegiline was chosen & not something that is already proven good for depression like Parnate or Nardil?

Cheers,
Panda.

Possble reasons I can think of:

1) It's good for Parkinson's (there is limited data on Parnate for this, but selegiline is much better) and ADHD (and Parnate is good for ADHD too).

2) The same reason why Ritalin is more popular than Adderall, and Adderall is more popular than Dexedrine, and Dexedrine is more popular than Desoxyn: bad publicity. Perhaps they figure that physicians are already scared of Parnate/Nardil and would not believe patches with them in it are any safer even though they would be. Selegiline is largely an obscure drug.

3) It is easier for Mylan and Watson to continue to produce selegiline than it is to start producing something completely different.

And there's probably other reasons ...
