Drowsiness and sexual side effects question

Posted by greywolf on March 15, 2004, at 9:05:32

I despair of finding a med that does not cause me very significant sleepiness along with anorgasmia. I am presently on Effexor 75mg for BPII and OCD. I started the Effexor last week after a year of going without meds because these side effects were so prominent. I have found these same side effects in the past with Inderal, Paxil, Lithium, Prozac, Luvox, Imipramine, Wellbutrin, Serzone, Clomipramine, and Zoloft.

The only time I haven't experienced anorgasmia was with Trazadone. But I took it at night and needed a bulldozer to get me going in the morning.

Does anyone have any recommendations on meds that won't have me walking around like a zombie, falling asleep at my desk, and being aggravated in bed?

Remeron works for me, but it will knock you out. It use to knock me out, but I got use to it. Strange that you got anorgasmia with Wellbutrin, it's normally added on to SSRI's to help with the problem. How long did you trial Clomipramine & Imipramine for?

Cheers,

Panda:

Thanks for your response.

I tried them for 4-6 months each, one of them along with lithium (I think). But that's going back to a sucky time in my life, so I tend to have a conveniently imprecise memory of that time.

I know Wellbutrin has helped some people with sexual side effects, but from what I've read it has more to do with low sex drive than anorgasmia. Sex drive isn't really the problem for me, which makes it all the more frustrating.

Remeron has been good to me, I've been on it for several months now. Initially it was extremely sedating, but now I am use to it. I still sleep great with it, it just doesn't knock me out. It's 5-HT2A blockade is supposed to reverse SSRI anorgasmia. Clomipramine is an equally strong 5-HT2A blocker, but you take lots more of it, so it should definately work, if it didn't than I doubt Remeron will help you, but don't let that deter you from trying it. It has a long half-life, so if you take it before sleep, it should still be effective the next day.

How would you describe your anorgasmia? When I was on 75mg of Effexor I had alot of trouble. On 150mg I would be erect for as long as needed, but no amount of motion would do anything, after 15 minutes of frustration I find myself wondering what is on TV or something, like I could never focus on the job I was trying to do. I am now on 300mg of Effexor & 30mg of Remeron & have no orgasm or ejaculation problems. I still have no libido, no drive to ask for sex, but I am easily aroused to perform. It's like I am a womans idea of the perfect man. Doesn't nag for it, but performs on demand. :)

Cheers,
Panda.

Very much the same, only I'm usually turning on some sports radio by that point. :) What's Remeron like in terms of side effects? Also, I would think that increasing the Effexor to 150 would only make the problem more intractable?
