Hi all,
I would appreciate if you'd let me know if you or anyone else you know has had a reaction to topamax. I took it for about a week and then had to be hospitalized through the ER for acute hives..swelling, fever, the works. I have had hives before but never this bad, and this is the only time it could be medication related. My P doc says no way it was the topamax, but what do you think? Thanks!

Thanks!chemist here....i think your doctor is full of it. all the anticonvulsants - topamax being no exception - are prime candidates for reactions such as yours. i suggest seeing a dermatologist, ask for a plug biopsy, and is there are eosinophils present, then the drug reaction hypothesis is probably right-on....let me know how things turn out, and all the best, chemist

Thanks to both. Chemist, you are such a resource! They did not biopsy my skin in the hospital for some reason, but I will visit the allergist next week. Of course I am off it, and will let you know.

you're welcome....make sure you ask for a plug biopsy in the area where the rash occurred. and you are looking for eosinophils and perhaps some langerhans cells, although the former is more indicitive of the drug allergy.....all the best, chemist
