Which of these two benzos is best for the long-term treatment of anxiety and anxiety-induced insomnia? Am currently on Zyprexa, but the side-effects (sexual dysfunction, constipation, possible TD) are worrisome. Any comments greatly appreciated.

I use both, Clonazepam every day 2-6mgs or diazepam when I can get it-5-40mgs. Diazepam faster onset and gives a doppier feel, indeed many Docs think of it as dry alcohol. Clonazepam gives strong anxiety control, and abolishes panic attacks when dosed high enought in many people

My vote would be Klonopin.

I prefer clonazepam -- great anxiety relief and no side effects at all for me after the first couple of weeks. Valium (diazepam) makes me feel disoriented and "drunk" (not in a good way), although I may not have given it enough of a chance.
I'd go with Klonopin, and just expect to feel a bit sleepy at first -- this usually goes away quite quickly.

Definitely clonazepam, taken twice daily to keep a very constant concentration in the brain. It's a high-potency benzodiazepine (diazepam's not). I found diazepam totally useless, but clonazepam is starting to help my Social Phobia at 6 mg per day total. I don't feel sedated, just have a reduction in anxiety. You can go up to 16 mg per day if necessary.

>hello, chemist here. diazepam is WAY more potent than clonazepam. 16 mg qd is putting you in the category of a person who suffers from epilipsy. diazepam is extremely potent, way more so than klonopin. you need to look at dose/response curces. and active metabolites, not elimination. all the best, chemist

Six mg of clonazepam/day is an awful lot for most people, and 16 mg would be a very large amount unless it's being used for epilepsy. Obviously responses vary, and this is something to discuss with your doctor, but "typical" doses are in the 1-2 mg/day range. Also, the long half-life of clonazepam makes once-a-day dosing feasible for many people.
I don't have any sedation etc. with 1 mg, but I suspect that 6 (or especially 16) would pretty much knock me out. Two mg/day is about my limit, and it's very rare that I take that much. But again, everyone responds differently.
I haven't checked into the relative potencies of clonazepam versus diazepam lately, but my understanding is that diazepam is one of the most potent benzos. Even low doses have very strong (and unpleasant) effects for me, although others do very well with it, and it's the "original" benzo.
