Feeling down and losing hope

Posted by sdjeff on October 23, 2004, at 2:32:21

Hi

It's been quite a while since I last posted. Things lately haven't been so good. I lost my girlfriend. Things were going great, then all of the sudden she won't return my calls and I haven't talked to her in over 2 weeks. On top of that, I lost my job on the 2nd and haven't had the motivation to find another. I'm 27 and live with my parents. I have no hope of moving out. I've been so fatigued, depressed and irritable that it's effecting my relationship with my daughter and the rest of my family. I can barely get out of bed and I'm not funtioning well.

I've been having a lot of suicidal thoughts but no plans yet.

Medwise, I'm on 15 mg Zyprexa and 60 mg Cymbalta. The Zyprexa does wonders for my anxiety, paranoia and mild psychotic symptoms. It doesn't help with the depression much. The Cymbalta seems to do little to nothing. I've tried a loooong list of meds and so far these are the only two I've tolerated.

Hello Sdjeff

I'm very sorry to hear you are having such a rough time and having to deal with these problems while you are depressed makes it even tougher.

How about seeing your doctor? Maybe a new medication or just talking about your problems could help. If you posted the drugs you have tried perhaps you could get some opinions here. There seem to be many knowledgeable and caring contributors.

You mentioned your daughter...when you have suicidal thoughts, would it help to try and replace these with thoughts of her? I know it is easier said than done but I think it is an advantage of having children. It gives you a strong reason to fight these thoughts and urges.

Let us know how you are going.
Sabre

hi, jeff. I don't post often on this board but i saw your name and...
sorry you're not doing well on cymbalta. i've seen a lot of posts along that line - when do you go back to your doctor? how long have you given this AD to work? - any improvement?
losing your girlfriend doesn't help. when we're depressed we don't handle stressors well, as i'm sure you know.
keep those bad thoughts at bay, jeff.

I too have started reading these posts quite a bit. I get on here when my hubby is watching tv and my kids are busy. I myself have lost a few jobs.....haa ya, if you ony knew, and one husband many years ago. Life can feel like there is no hope, but there is. ALWAYS. Don't let it get you. Your daughter needs you more than you know, dont do anything to harm yourself. You have parents that live for you and I cannot emagine how it feels to lose a child. My therapist told me that most suicides happen when a person is feeling the lowest, and if they would have waited maybe one hour later, the urge wouldn't have been as strong and they wouldn't have done it. Keep posting, let us know how you are doing. ok? -L

Jeff,
I'm sorry to hear that things are taking a down turn. It's such a difficult thing to handle, the ups and downs.

Please remind me...have you ever done therapy of any kind? Perhaps now might be a good time?

At any rate, I wish you peace and lightness.

Be well,
gg

Thanks everyone.

As far as trying different meds, I have a very long list. I can't remember them all. seemd like I'vetried manymeds from just about every category. I haven't tried MAOIs yet. I'm in a situation where my pdoc gives me samples or the drug has to be dirt cheap. I see my pdoc on the 10th. I'm trying to hold out until then.

I'm still grappling with these thoughts, but I'm doing okay, all things considered.

Thanks again for your kind words and advice.

Man!, I would forget her. Get another girlfreind. Sounds kind of nice that she left you, rather than putting up a fight.
