How to overcome depression from Klonopin?

Posted by anony on December 30, 2004, at 2:39:25

Hi. I've GAD and SP, and I'm considering to take Klonopin again. I really didn't want to take any drug, but I guess I'd better and stick with it, even if I'll have to take it for rest of my life.

The thing I'm worried about is depressing feelings I get from taking that drug. It definitely makes me depressed.

What can I do to decrease that effect? I wouldn't go into any SSRI's and Wellbutrin since I've had bad experience from them. I'd like to hear an advice from someone who's taking Klonopin on regular basis.

Thx.

Hi,
Possibly try a shorter acting benzodiazepine instead such as lorazepam or even the much maligned xanax. Alternatively you could try a lower dose of the klonopin than the last time. Have you tried neurontin, lyrica, or other anticonvulsants? Sometimes they are very helpful for anxiety. Seroquel gets a lot of rave reviews from people I know as does trazodone for their anti-anxiety effects. Finally there is always cognitive behavioral therapy.

Hope that helps some.

The first thing you need to take is folic acid (1mg)

Anticonvulsants depleate this vitamin. Shortages of this vitamin will lead to depression. It may not cure the depression, but doctors have known for a while that folic acid can reverse some of the psychiatric side effects of anticonvulsants.

Hi,

Neurontin is a 'mild mannered' anticonvulsant that definately has use (has for me) as an antianxiety agent. At higher doses however it too becomes a pain in the butt with side effects, but not generally at those used for anxiety/social phobia etc. It also has some utility in some people for depressive symptoms although it's best use in psychiatry is for anxiety and agitation. Lyrica is the son of neurontin. It is available in canada and europe and through internet pharmacies until it receives final approval in the US. Studies indicate it is as effective as benzos without withdrawal issues. We'll see. I have not tried that one, but you can easily research it on Google.
