Thank you for the Metamucil tip

Posted by Squiggles on August 11, 2005, at 9:14:58

I'm sorry i forget who recommended this
but it works so far (also taking Tums and
Kaepectate but very little); I think it's
the METAMUCIL that works for lithium-induced
u-know-what; wonder why; maybe it targets
IBS or something like that. Hope it continues.

Thank you I think it was Diane or Lara?

Psyllium husk is just great stuff isn't it, for all sorts of things, if you don't go enough or if you go too much. I take it every morning. You can (maybe where you are) get it from health food shops as is, without the sugar that is in Metamucil.

Yes, i read that it lowers cholesterol and
is good for your heart; regarding lithium
it has the interaction of lowering the dose --
which may be good or bad depending on the
blood tests; that may be why it helps
with diarrhea so far, i.e. that it lowers
the lithium dose. But my dr. ok'd it probably
not knowing exactly how low the dose goes -
as long as it is in the therapeutic range.

Thank you Declan.

Hi,
Wal-Mart has a generic version with aspartame that is a lot less expensive. They also have the generic with sugar. Great source of soluble fiber, and most of us do not get enough of that in our diet.

Mix about 3 tablespoons in a glass of water and let it sit for a minute. It binds together into a gelatinous mass (don't drink it this way, you could choke). This shows why it helps with diarrhea; it comes out that way too. Amazing how many doctors don't know about this stuff.

Be careful when you take psyllium husk as it can interfere with the absorption of some medications. For some of us this may be difficult, when our meds are spread out throughout the day. Build up your dosage slowly to avoid bloating and flatulence.

I noticed the gelatenous mass in one glass
which I had not mixed thoroughly. I said
"WT*"? I decided to throw that part away --
looked like someting from "Alien".

I would not say that it has been entirely
efficient but it has been about 6 years
that I have screwed up my gastro track
somehow, so... also I won't take much
as it DOES lower the lithium. I will also
give time in between dose.

There are many reasons why I have gastro
trouble, though my dr. may not keep track
of them, and jump to the lithium switch
solution -- i don't think that's the
best solution. See what i mean - smart-*ss;
oh well, it may have saved my life, or not.

Thanks - don't do Wal-Mart, but there are
many pharmacies around i can check.
