Need opinions of these two drugs.... I have been taking 10 mg. of ambien for like six years.... doesn't to anything for me at all anymore.... I DEFINITELY NEED SOMETHING TO SLEEP.... I take ativan twice a day, that doesn't make me sleepy, just calmer... but at nite, I need my rest or my anxiety just gets out of control. my counselor suggested I bring up lunesta to my pdoc, because she said just switching might be good for me, as I might just need a change... and she said lunesta is a pill you can take for longer periods of time without it wearing off.... what are your opinions,??? and are there any other sleeping pills out there that work better than these, that I don't know about?

Lunesta is probably better with long-term use than Ambien (the Ambien people didn't do long-term use studies back in the day, so you cant really do a head-to-head comparison). Add-ons might also help...neurontin, seroquel, remeron, trazadone, klonopin, an extra ativan or two, etc. can be added to the ambien, or used in its place (Ambien withdrawal isn't *usually* a big problem, but after 6 years of regular use you might want to take it very slow it you do switch over). Lunesta would probably be the easiest option (when I took Ambien, I used as-needed add-ons instead of doing an all out switch to another sleep aid). Good luck, and keep us all posted!

They are both good. Lunesta has been shown to work for a longer period of time than ambien. I think that a good idea would be to switch to Lunesta. Then if and when it becomes less effective, switch back to Ambien. Then back to Lunesta, etc.
