i fit every single atypical feature hugely, the overeating is constant, to the point where it seems to be the only thing i enjoy, i am now close to 150lbs., am usually around 120-130, i cannot get myself out of bed now, i feel extensive paralysis physically and mentally, and every day (every day) i agonize over a rejection that happened 4 years ago. i also have difficulty with rejection from everyone and revert to very childish states because of it and all throughout my life i have been this way. it adds a very deep mental component to my already exhausting paralysis. i am wearing the same clothes every day, they havent been washed in over a week and have food stains on them.
what do i do with this? MAOIs? what do they actually do?

Hi IFMP,
>MAOIs?
Phenelzine (Nardil) and tranylcypromine (Parnate) are the most well-established MAOI anti-depressants.
>what do they actually do?
Nardil.......
1. Elevates mood
2. Restores interest in life in general
3. Reduces anxiety, especially in social situations
4. Inhibits rejection sensitivity
5. Decreases the tendency to oversleepParnate........
1. Elevates mood
2. Enhances motivation
3. Decreases the tendency to oversleepIn the treatment of atypical depression, MAOIs are the 'gold standard'.
Selegiline's efficacy as an antidepressant is much less consistent. It should not be considered to be a replacement for the classical MAOIs.
Kind regards

Hi Philipa, sadly us in the UK can't really get prescribed MAOIs - and did I wish we could!
We first go to see our GP and they can only prescribe SSRIs and the odd TCA -- if you want anything stronger you have to get referred to a psychdoc, and that very very rarely happens (from what i undstand) and even they are very reluctant to prescribe MAOIs. Some of us UK pbabblers have had sucess getting MAOIs going privately.
Its unbelieveable, isn't it.

Merri-Tulli it's the same way in the states. Don't know where the people who post find a doctor to RX them. Most of them like willyee's doctor are very old and remember when they were the only choice. But SSRI's are the ones most prescribed. Occasionally an older doc will prescribe TCA's. But almost anyone can see a pdoc. Fondly, Phillipa
