Cutting back my son's Zoloft by 25 mg

Posted by DanielJ on May 1, 2006, at 13:28:21

My son has Schizophrenia so he really does not
have an interest in his meds, only that he likes
his Pdoc so when we remind him (every night) he takes
them.
We decided to hold back 25 mg of his 75 mg dose
to see if we can cut back like we did on the Zyprexa.
After 2 days his attitude is slightly flatter than before.
His problem was that he was getting manic thoughts,
acting jumpy and nervous so we are
thinking overmedication. He has been on 75 mg over
2 years. He seems a bit calmer now so as long as
he is stable well, wish us luck.

Your son may like his pdoc, but it sure sounds like you don't. These decisions are too complex to make w/o the guidance of a GOOD pdoc. If you feel that you don't have a good pdoc (and I suspect that's what you'd say since you think that he's overmedicating your child) you need to find one. At least for a 2nd opinon.

How long has your son been on a lower dose of Zyprexa? Is it possible that his current probs are b/c of too low of a dose? Or are they remaining probs left over from too much Zyprexa? Or are they w/drawal from the Zoloft? I don't know that much abt Zoloft personally, but some SSRI's have awful w/drawal and so you have to go ultra slow to get off of them.

I know you just care abt your son. But please do find a pdoc that you trust and that can work WITH you.

Best,
EE

I'm wondering what dose the zyprexa was at and for how long before that was cut back? As a zyprexa withdrawal victim myself, I can tell you that strange things happen after zyprexa dose decreases and they can go on for weeks or even months.

Zoloft from 75mg to 50mg is a pretty big jump for a lot of people. You might consider cutting the pills with a knife or a pill splitter or a razor blade to get smaller incremental jumps.

It's hard to tell if it is the zyprexa or the zoloft. Anytime meds are changed weird things can happen, sometimes good sometimes not.

"His problem was that he was getting manic thoughts,
acting jumpy and nervous so we are thinking overmedication."

It could also be undermediction, due to the reduction of Zyprexa. It could have noting
to do with the meds; just that his symptoms
are getting worse.

Is the pdoc onboard with this change ?
