Topamax reaction?

Posted by TJO on August 8, 2006, at 19:20:02

Hi all,
has been a while since I've posted much but i seem to be having a bit of a "paranoid' reaction to Topamax at 100 mg. Anybody else experience anything similiar?

Topamax is known to produce psychiatric side effects, including psychosis. You can review this Medline search:

Hi,
Just to update-I was having psychotic symptoms after several weks of being at 100 mg of Topamax, and so took no Topamax for 1 night, and then 50 the next night. I feel ok at 50mg.

Is there any way to predict that sort of reaction? Such as someone who's got anxiety is at risk, or someone who's never had psychotic symptoms with their depression is at very low risk? Or that it's more likely when combining it with certain other drugs?

You ask great questions that I don't think have yet been addressed. At this point, the only thing I gathered from the list of abstracts is that having a prior history of psychiatric disorders was associated with a higher risk of incurring Topamax-induced psychiatric side effects.
