GOOD news and BAD news about being 18

REPEATED FROM ABOVE:

First the bad: Youre 18 about to being the prime of your life and it is a shame you have to go into it worrying about and dealing with emotional issues. Kids like you should be thinking about girls, video games, things to blow money on, trips to the beach and NOT urinary retention.

Now the GOOD: I was 27 when all this hit me. Because I was so young, my body held up much better than someone twice my age for anxiety, bizarre side effects (urinary retention hasnt been one but Ive had a zillion others, esp on Prozac). By going through this at a little earlier age, you hope to get it solved by the time you reach middle age if not earlier. Because if it comes out of the blue and smacks you then you may are prone to additional health problems which can make the emotional issues much more difficult to deal with. In my opinion (and I could be wrong) its a little harder to deal with depression when you also have to think about arthritis, diabetes II, hip surgery, bad back, high blood pressure, etc.

Michael that's true. But it is concerning that when I was in school no one was on ADD or ADHD meds as discipline seemed to be what worked Seems like a country when I'm out and about of very young kids who have temper tantrums and get there way as discipline can result in parents being reported. A few teachers as neighbors they say the schools discipline is a no no. I feel it's sad. Football you are no means alone. There are a lot of sporadic postings from younger people than you. Love Phillipa

Just a comment on ADHD... no harm intended...

It's not just about kids with behavior problems and hyperactivity. Those are some of the diagnostic criteria for 2 of the 3 subtypes of ADHD.

There's also there inattentive type... those who have difficulty concentrating. They may or may not be hyperactive.

Hyperactive children may or may not be defiant.

There are many faces of this general disorder. I hate when people point out poor discipline and behavioral problems when speaking of ADHD, because it's a stereotypical generalization.

Plus, ADHD isn't just a childhood disorder.

I am just saying NO BIG DEAL about being youngest » football

Football, its great that you have taken the initative to seek out info at such a young age. Thats what makes you different.

There are millions of others just like you, same age or younger, just havent bothered to inquire (at least here) or taking word of pdoc and parents (what a shame, lol).

Proud of you for being a man and finding out things on your own.

Jelly true. I was referring to what the neighborhood teachers have relayed to me and what I see in the stores no way would any of my kids ever have behaved this way. There are always exceptions which I excluded. Sorry I know you have this disorder. Love Phillipa

No offense taken. I just wanted to clear the issue up. The inattentive and adult types are fairly new in their acceptance and recognition.

I do agree that a lot of children are poorly behaved, whether or not they have a disorder. Not all are though, it just seems to be a trend in comparison to past decades.

My mother is an elementary school teacher. She notices a huge difference in children when they do or don't take meds. So it's not all about personality or upbringing. A lot of these kids really do need treatment in order to function properly.

Jelly why do you suppose this is does your Mom have any theories? I know a lot of people that refuse vaccinations of their children as after one had them they developed severe autism. Right or wrong that is what they feel. Love Phillipa

No theories. Just observations. My point was that some children's "bad behavior" is exacerbated by their condition, which is improved with medication.
