Milnacipran reaction...

Posted by dapper on August 12, 2008, at 16:28:19

So tried milnacipran for first time this morning and threw up about two hours later. Is that likely from me having too much caffeine with it, or is it just a plain old bad reaction? I am generally not at all sensitive to drugs. I was on Effexor XR 225mg/daily for awhile without problem. Also take trivastal 50mg/daily and lamictal 200mg/daily. Thoughts?

As with all meds, certain side effects do not happen with everyone. With Milnacipran, nausea is one of the more common side effects.

If you didn't take it with food, try that. Another option is to get some empty gel caps, size 'OO', from a health food store or Whole Foods Market. Empty a capsule of Milnacipran onto a flat plate and divide it with a razor blade into equal sized piles. For example, 25mg divided into 4 piles would be about 6mg each. Then use the blade to push the pile onto the pointed end of a knife, stick the knife in the open capsule and dump in the powder. That way you could do 6mg 4 times a day instead of 25mg all at once, or you could start slower with 6mg a couple or three times a day. As your body adjusts then increase the doses.

I recall seeing a pubmed case study where someone did well on Milnacipran but had severe nausea. They found that Zyprexa eliminated the nausea.

I would say just go slow and low, using the custom dose strategy. And take them with food.

It's the most common side effect, the nausea; that and urinary problems.
