Is weight gained due to an SSRI dose dependent?
That is, does a bigger dose cause more of a weight gain than a lower dose?
(Would it be possible for a lower dose to cause more weight gain than a higher dose?)

Purer SSRIs like (es)citalopram are not likely to cause weight gain, but weight gain on "dirtier" SSRIs like paroxetine is not unusual. I would say that higher dose produces more weight gain.

whats your list of clean an dirty, you lost me,citalopram is a fat med , thats why i chose sertraline but still got fat an thats walking 5 mile a day with crap leg,s explain what you mean it sounds like were on heroin ,ie is it clean man ?or is it dirty/

Well I have never got fat on an SSRI, everybody is different. What I meant was that more selective SSRIs like escitalopram where binding affinities for e.g. muscarinic, histamine and serotonin receptors are so low that it's not of clinical relevance. Just serotonin reuptake inhibition itself, AFAIK, is not prone to cause weight gain. You often call a drug that targets unwanted receptors "dirty".

>Some medications are dose-dependent, yes... can't speak for it but I imagine one of the most liable for it, Paxil, probably is.

I've just never gained weight from SSRI's even when at 250mg of luvox no weight gain was quite thin at the time l0mg of paxil for two years no weight gain either. Phillipa

thanks tensor. for explaning the clean an dirty ,as for getting fat the forum is full of people on ssri,s plagued by weight gain prozac another fat maker. i no it could be the slowing down of your mind am body thats can cause it, ie if high anxierty is releaved then weight gain, theres no better fat burner than anxierty

I think it depends on how the SSRI's can cause weight gain.
If they stimulate appetite they can increase weight gain through more calorie intake
If they make people tired and lethargic they can cause weight gain through burning less calories
They can and do cause excess stimulation of cortisol from the adrenal glands. The excess cortisol will cause increased fat gain right on the abdomen.
SSRI's can and do downregulate testosterone. Less testosterone will result in lower metabolism, more fat and less endurance among many things and less insulin sensitivity´.
SSRI's can lower thyroid output or make thyroid hormones ineffeicent because of high cortisol. This will decrease overall metabolism and fat burning.
Decreased insulin sensitivity from overall endoctrine decline can cause increased fat storage.
SSRI's effect on the endoctrine system may be less on lower dosages.
