daily depression med ok..insomnia med NO sorry

Posted by linkadge on February 23, 2015, at 18:19:09

Whenever I read 'reputable' health info on depression, anxiety and insomnia, there seems to be a significant disconnect in the way that these conditions are viewed.

For instance, it is fine to take a daily med for depression.

However, for insomnia, it is not ok. In fact, the insomnia sufferer is supposed to use more 'proven' treatments like talk therapy or sleep hygiene. When googling insomnia, its as if this disease / condition doesn't even exist.

The consensus seems to be that insomnia is a lifestyle choice and you can fix it by reducing stress, going to bed at the right time and drinking warm milk.

What am I missing here? There is probably more $ lost in the economy to insomnia than to depression. Why is insomnia not a disease that warrants treatment?

Why is daily use of a med for depression or anxiety ok, but daily use of a sleep med is faux pas?

For the chronic insomnia sufferer...."daily medication use is not recommended". WTF is this?
That's like saying that opioids are ok for minor occasional pain, but chronic pain sufferers should avoid using painkillers. WTF is this?

I can go to work depressed. I can't go to work on zero hours of sleep.

What you post is true but now here being in chronic pain is also okay. I am lucky enough to have an old fashioned pdoc that lets me have my benzos. Phillipa

I completely agree with you. Insomnia has ruined my life for the last six years and all the advice that is given out is recycled over and over again and costantly reported as if it's new information. It's dumfounding to me that there isn't something that really works long-term for depression and doesn't make you fat and retarded. It's honestly a joke
