One word.
Toxins.
My 25 year journey through the hell called depression taught me that 90% or greater of the psychiatric symptoms are directly caused by toxins in the body with affinity for brain receptors.
There is a new book on the market called Tox-Sick. I saw the reviews of it and it looks spot on to me. The author surprised me by listing off a grocery list of psychiatric syndromes and diseases that mostly clear up when the goal becomes "clean". They are all the same complicated multi-faceted issues we all suffer. All of them. Actually I shouldn't have been surprised, because I already knew that, but to hear it go public from someone else's research, was confirming. Nobody here has some strange mysterious invisible mental thing that meds just can't seem to treat very well. What they do have, is a body full of toxins from somewhere in their environment and or food and or infection. All the same stuff underlying our problems.
Who are our enemies messing with our brains, and moods? Sugars. Molds, fungus, from our homes and foods...explosive growth with American sugar consumption....that's the true enemy right there...sugar....get rid of that....and your depression is likely gone a year from now, without meds. Molds, sugars. Plastics are suspect but no proof. We have seen hints with BPA free and such. Gluten...was good in Bible days, messed with in Frankenstein fashion by modern day lab workers. Same with anything "genetically modified". Non-GMO is normal, natural, and good. GMO is unnatural, not normal, harmful in quantity or accumulation (as in death with corn farmers who ate it as their primary food....south america....serious illnesses and deaths....from common GMO corn because fake is cheaper than natural.) Government says these are safe, whatever that means, no details there, but they also said....welll....you know....enough fibs to write a book 10 feet tall.
One need not get dramatic and do a ton of stuff all at once. That will probably fail. Take it in pieces. Any and all forward progress in terms of "cleaning up" will prove helpful down the road. Sudden progress is usually not evident...it took years and years for disease to set in....it will take a least months to push it back.
I used to push the whole idea of Lyme Disease causing every psychiatric condition, and that is still deadly true. The problem is it cannot be accurately diagnosed with objective measures, so it has to be treated by reasonable suspicion and long term. Entire books are devoted to that topic alone. They saved me, strong pushback against all of my psych symptoms, remission or near remission is more common than not now.
I mentioned the Lyme in this topic of toxins in psychiatry, simply because that's basically what Lyme is....a body full of toxins....from normal routine activities of the bacteria.
So we need to study online not to become experts on psychiatric medications and mechanisms of neurotransmitters, but rather, mold in homes and how to reduce. Gluten. Non-GMO. Heavy metal exposure. Stealth infections....Lyme and Candida. Pesticides. Herbicides. Chemical cleaners.
I am confident that for whoever shifts the whole mindset to "toxins in the brain", gets better from here.
Disclaimer: True healing....not symptomatic cover-up...takes time. My case was especially bad, unusually bad, and took 3 years of anti-Lyme anti-toxin efforts to see what I was sure I would never ever see.....remission with no meds at all.
Check out toxin books, read up on google, just get familiar with it. I am here to say, your future is there, not in the next med or the next cocktail.
Final sidenote, no surprise, the explosive growth of cancers, diabetes, and dozens of mystery diseases....the same underlying issues....toxins messing with the works.
IMO

Hi bleauberry!
I certainly agree that a lot of these symptoms associated with "mental illness" could be caused by any number of things, but the problem to me is that there isn't enough solid information to point us in the right direction as far as how do we figure out what "toxins" are making us ill, and how do we get rid of these toxins?
The word "detox" itself is such a buzzword but what does that really mean? How do we "detox"? What are the "toxins"? It's all so vague to me.
I've read Dr. Hyman's "Ultramind solution" where he talks about how to fix your "broken brain" and while I did find some things about it informative, most of it was this same sort of generic discussion of the "toxins" and how they're making us all sick.
Where can I find more specific information? Again, it's all too vague for me to latch onto right now.
It's also hard to take Dr. Hyman too seriously when he basically tells you to take hundreds of dollars of supplements a month, from his own company! How is that any better than big pharma?
I think the best approach is an "integrative" approach. I still take psych meds, but I'm on low doses now, and combine them with supplements that have some science behind them, like omega-3, vitamin d, and methylfolate.
I certainly agree with your point about sugar. I just recently watched a documentary called "Fed Up' have you seen it?

What are you doing to reduce inflammation?
I used minocycline for a few years to reduce brain inflammation. It inhibits the secretion of pro-inflasmmatory cytokines from microglia. It really helped, especially in the beginning. Unfortunately, I had to discontinue it as I began to develop hyperpigmentation.

our lives are filled with chemicals additives that we take in throughout the day, every day. many foods we eat have many additives that have no place in our diet. theres really no telling what the chemicals in foods, like artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, pesticides and the chemicals added to give foods a certain texture/consistency are doing to us. even many medications have artificial food coloring and sweeteners added to them. not to mention the pollutants like mercury that ocean fish are exposed to. even in most dog foods, where artificial colors make no difference to how appealing the food is to the dog, companies add them anyway to make them more appealing to humans, in hopes they'll be more likely to continue buying this brand for their dog.
then there are all the pollutants we are exposed to in our environment. even if, for the most part, we are only exposed to what ever the level environmental agencies decide are acceptable, what are these pollutants doing to us over our lifetime? after 10, 20, 30 50, 80 years of exposure on a daily basis? or what they do to the genetics we pass down to our offspring that could cause difficulties at some point in their life.
really, our lives are filled with pollutants and chemicals. and i think one would have move to the moon to get away from all of them. but even then, then there are still untraviolet rays from the sun that can cause advanced skin aging and possibly skin cancer and cataracts in the eyes.
but yeah, its basically a constant battle to avoid and rid your body of toxins. especially if you live within a thousand miles of civilization. so i say, just get informed on what youre exposed to in foods and water, as well as in your environment. just look at the ingredients in your can of soup or your box of macaroni. google environmental pollutants and how they make their way into our bodies, or through our food and water supply. and try to avoid them without making your life unnecesarily difficult. but then again, if one is suffering, one might have to go completely of their way to avoid certain toxins to get to feeling better.
oh and also, chemicals that are readily recognized as dangerous by the FDA, are used to coat food containers that our foods come in. these chemicals can easily get into the food, but arent required to be listed on the ingredients label. at the moment, i cant think of the certain chemicals or the exact reasons theyre used. bht they have just as much place in our diet as a bottle of shampoo does.
This is the end of the thread.
