I'm trying this again - New name

Posted by Mc Comfortable on May 28, 2008, at 22:32:26

What is up?

I recently changed my posting name, followed procedure, posted a few times with the new name, had not received nor read onsite **any** info on being blocked and wham, I try to post and I am informed the "old" new name is blocked.

I have not seen where I AM blocked so I'm try again. My apologies if I missed a memo on some violation I incurred and could not find in my intense researching. If I have been blocked, I would at least like to know what I did. Sort of that, this current new name is fine if I could keep it.

"Please do not post under multiple names at one time. Also, please do not post under a new name to circumvent a block."

I did not do either of those.

Sorry, that was my fault. I blocked you from posting for a week when you changed your posting name without following the steps in the FAQ. But I don't think I told you that. Still, if there's an issue with names, the thing to do isn't to post with yet another one, so I'm going to block this name from posting for a week and inactivate your other ones.

Please don't take this personally, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person.

Thanks,

Bob

I don't understand a block for this either. Person sounds confused. Why block; why not help this person to follow the procedure properly. I don't think it is very nice to block someone for being confused. There was no foul or harm done to anyone. And this person asked for help and got a block instead. Wow. I used to post her some time back, but I quit posting and have not posted much at all. Don't plan to. Seems kind of scary to have this happen to someone.

Dr. Bob et al -- warning -- long and likely boring

I am grateful for the support I have seen posted regarding this situation.

I was not posting under multiple names when I was sanctioned on another board for doing so. I was not trying to circumvent a block as was also noted in the same adm post on another board. I did follow the instructions given to me by adm. I was NOT made aware of being blocked entirely from posting on any of the boards nor was I notified via babblemail or email and therefore I DID NOT KNOW. Dr. Bob has acknowledged the lack of communication and I do appreciate that even while not appreciating the aftermath.

I will try to the best of my ability to be constructive and civil in my comments. My purpose for posting these comments is this circumstance, hopefully, will not happen to another. Please consider the following as part of what this boards stated purpose involves: Possible topics might be problems with the site, **ideas for improvements**, **dealing with particular types of posts**, statistics, the Psycho-Babble Yahoo groups, etc

My suggestions:

1) Always make posters aware they are blocked. I find: Ill block someone, not tell them and theyll figure it out is a poor adm procedure.

2) Clarify in the FAQ and when informing a poster of a block due to posting name policy if the NAME is blocked or if the poster is blocked entirely from posting. As was put to me, I was informed to follow the policy for name change, which I did, btw. I have seen another poster instructed to return to the previous name or follow the guidelines for a change of name as the NAME in the violation was blocked.

3) If violations of the posting name policy are as serious as I have come to well understand, assure that is made clearer in the FAQ.

4) Regarding #3, perhaps closer attention is needed by adm to this occurring on the boards, as I think it happens more than it is addressed.

And as long as Im writing about adm items:

I have seen a fair amount of blocks and PBCs given to different individual posters due to incivility - incivility, I assess, coming out of frustration and annoyance but also coming out of the nonaction by adm to recognize or to validate the level of disturbance caused by a specific posting behavior or consistent set of posting behaviors. I do not excuse the incivility but maybe, just maybe, look at the WHY or the possible root cause for the incivility. I think this is especially important if one or a few posters activities appear to be the catalyst of others receiving sanctions. Filing this under the good for the community as opposed to serving the needs of the one or the few, I think it is worth an adm exploration. This boards adm. has before installed guidelines for all to follow which address the behavior of the one or the few in order to calm the discord of the more.

I do have ideas as to how to address these behaviors by additional guidelines but the policies I would like to see implemented are neither popular nor stand a snowballs chance in hell of becoming part of the expected behavior here. Plus, such guidelines would require closer moderating of the boards versus occasional administrating. I believe those functions differ. I only add this paragraph so as not to appear to bring a problem without thoughts of a solution.

If you have made it to this point in my post without extreme boredom, its amazing as it is the same old, same old with, possibly, some differences in the cast of players.

I am tempted to end with a: So there, Im leaving but I dont know how I will proceed regarding posting or being at this community.

I wish everyone well.

You didn't know?
THAT is BAD.
Thats what happened to me one time. I didn't know I was blocked, and tried to post, and it said i was blocked and I was so shamed by that. It was shocking and it hurt. I think it would be much kinder to inform a poster of an impending block.
When such a thing happened to me, parts just wanted to punish me for being bad, cuz I was bad.
Still got the scars to prove it.
Thats why I not here much, cuz it scares me.
Sorry this happened to you.

Thanks for trying to be constructive, I appreciate your suggestions.

We're continuing to think about those posts and what the best way is for us to deal with them. Why do they frustrate and annoy you so much? Could you just not read them?

> > Why do they frustrate and annoy you so much?

Ah, a slippery question to answer. Yes, some of it is a personal irritation. From a board standpoint, I don't see an advantage where monopolizing in a "me, me" way helps the board goals. Others needs may not get met while others, uh, unhealthy needs are. These are argueable points. Not completely heartless, maybe there are no favors being done to the people who are kinda, (deep breath) taking over either.

I'm well aware of course, irritation and annoyance are in the eye of the beholder. I do think I've seen it in more than me.

> Could you just not read them?

I try - difficult when that's alot of what's there.

It's a unique situation. One in which I wish the option would be to address one to one - I don't think, as just guessing, that would be an option as any boundaries or limits would need to apply to all.
