Any alternatives for anxiety other than valerian?

Posted by smg0918 on September 16, 2003, at 3:42:39

I suffer from GAD and am hoping to find an alternative to SSRIs. I have taken Xanax -- which leaves me basically comatose (!) -- and Lexapro -- which definitely works for the anxiety but leaves me absolutely exhausted and with no interest whatsoever in sex.

I tried Valerian Root a few months ago and ended up in ER with severe heart palpitations, so I definitely can't go that route again. I've heard all the warnings about Kava so am very afraid to go that route.

What about Sam-e? Is that really only for depression or do those who suffer from anxiety get any relief from it?

My doctor has given me another prescription for Lexapro but wants to add Wellbutrin to counter the side effects. I'd rather not take these meds, but will if I have to. I hate living with anxiety and it's affecting my sleep, ability to eat, etc.

Many thanks!

What dosage of Xanax zonked you out?
maybe you could go low dose with that?
I'm on a new version of sustained release that just came out - which I'm pretty happy with however it is very expensive in the US - but worth it so far for me.

Thanks for responding. I took only a very small dosage of Xanax. It just makes me too sleepy/dizzy to take during the day. I hadn't heard of the sustained release form. It doesn't make you tired at all?

No, no tiredness, sleepiness, or fatigue on Xanax XR. Of course we all respond differently.

You might also consider Ativan which I love but my PDoc wanted me to transition to either Klono or Xanax XR because of tolerance building up to the short-acting meds.
