Do you take a Multi-vitamin?

Posted by Sarah T. on March 1, 2005, at 0:58:56

I'm interested to know how many of you take a multi-vitamin. If so, which brand do you prefer and why?

I take a pre-natal vitamin prescribed by my OB/GYN since I am of child-bearing age and not preventing pregnancy. This vitamin gives me the folic acid I need. Plus, it makes my skin look great, and my hair and nails are growing like weeds!

I feel pretty good on them. I figure I just have expensive urine if I am getting too much of anything. Plus it's not that expensive...about a $5/ month thing with my insurance.

I highly recommend it.

Hi gg,

Do you know the brand name of the vitamins? I'm interested, particularly regarding the improvements in hair and skin. I'm going to be seeing an endocrinologist soon. I think I might have a thyroid problem. I've been having a lot of hair loss, split/peeling fingernails and severe constipation. I do take a lot of B vitamins, Centrum multi-vitamin, extra vitamin C and Magnesium glycinate. Perhaps my symptoms would be even worse without them. I don't know. I'm pretty upset about the physical changes that have taken place recently, so I'd be interested in trying that magic vitamin you've been taking.

I was originally prescribed Nestabs, but for some reason they changed to Natatabs. But they are essentially the same thing. I've got hypothyroidism, too. Hope your endo visit goes well.

I've seen many "Women's Formula" vitamins but I'm never sure which ones to buy. Now that you've endorsed the Natatabs, I will look for them. Do you need a prescription for them, or did your doctor give you the rx for insurance purposes?

You need a prescription for them because they have 1 M of folic acid, an amount which requires a scrip. The OTC pre-natals and women's vitamins usually have up to 400 mcg. Most recommendations I have heard for avoiding spinal malformations in fetuses is to get at least 400 mcg per day. So OTC is probably all right. But I just went with what she recommended.

Dang, this reminds me that I need to get a new GYN due to insurance changes. I'm devastated by that. I LOVE my doc. She is the best. sigh

Hi Sarah,
Good l;uck with your endo appt.
I function as hypothyroid and I'm on thyroid meds too.
When I was over in England for a few weeks last year I was taking cod liver oil with some calcium in it, a magnesium citrate supp, a zinc supplement, an iron supp, my thyroid meds, some oestrogen meds, fish oil, a multi (I think that covers it?)
..anyway after a while my fingernails started that splitting and going yuk..kind thicker and maybe some ridges too. After I came back they began to heal up and have stopped since. I don't recall changing anything re supps. I guess I was exercising more over there..walking a few hours a day..so maybe I was lowish on thyroid hormones?
BUt it's the ONLY time in my life my nails went yuk!
I'd love to know what it was.
I was coming off doxycycline antibiotics which I'd been on for few weeks as well.
Any thoughts ?
Jan
