Hi, I'm new here, and I had a few questions about Depression and Alternative medicine. I'm currently taking 300 mgs of Effexor a day, but it costs $200 a month, and I want to explore natural alternatives that don't cost so much. Has anyone here taken Effexor and a natural supplement together? I want to wean myself off of Effexor, but I think I'll need to take them together for awhile until that happens. Are there any consequences to taking both together? And what should I look at for replacing my Effexor? Thanks for any and all help!

Hi,
I've taken Effexor with l-tyrosine and DLPA in order to get some more motivation. I didn't have any success with it though. I would like to try adding DLPA in higher dosages though as well as trying l-glutamine. I also tried adding DMAE but I may have needed to go higher in dosage on that as well because I didn't see much in the way of results. Same goes for NADH.Others on this board have had success adding l-tyrosine, DLPA, DMA and/or NADH to their antidepressant. It's worth a try.
Wish I could help you more.

Thanks, Kara S, that's good information that I'll keep in mind. So far, I've been successful on weaning myself off of the Effexor with the assistance of St. John's Wort (the Perika high potency brand). Last week I was on 225 mg Effexor and this week I go down to 150 mg starting today, all the while taking 900 mgs of the Perika. I've had a little bit of dizzyness and headachiness and one crying spell, but that's been par for the course even when I took Effexor. So, so far, so good. I'll keep you posted on how I'm doing.

I'm glad you're doing well on the Perika. I tried that but couldn't tolerate it. I'm not sure why as I had no problem with the Jarrow brand. Perika is quite different from the others I guess. I hope the rest of your withdrawal goes smoothly. Talk to you later.K

Isn't it interesting how different meds and herbs affect different people different ways?!It's too bad that you couldn't tolerate the Perika. If you don't mind me asking, exactly what problems did you have with it? I'd like to know in case the same thing starts happening with me.
Thanks!

>I had problems with Perika right away. I felt really sick (nauseous, pressure in my head, very tired). It was so bad that I couldn't function at all. I had to stay in bed and that was with only 1 (300 mg.) capsule of Perika. I took it for a couple more days but it never got any better. I felt 100% better once I stopped it. I didn't notice any side effects at all from 1 (300 mg.) capsule of the Jarrow brand though.
