Can You Take St Johns Wort With AD's?

Posted by Phillipa on March 11, 2005, at 17:48:06

I've just received my full shipment of Melaleuca products, and am totally impressed with the swiftness of delivery, savings of money, and most importantly the quality of their products, and the fact that they're enviornmentally safe, and nontoxic. All natural containing melaleuca oil. Soaps, lotions, cleaning supplies, supplements, etc. Anyway I've taken the Glucosamine of theirs for about 2 weeks, and my backpain is already better. They have a product that is St John's Wort and other natural ingrediants. Is it safe to take with AD's? Heck if the products continue to deliver like they are I might just get off the AD's and go with the St John's Wort. What do you think? Fondly, Phillipa

Dear Phillipa,

I believe that you can take St. John's Wort with ADs, although it will tell you on the bottle not to without consulting a doctor. However, I have been taking St. John's Wort with Effexor for 3 weeks now with no problems, and I am doing so on my own with no doctor's recommendation. I am weaning myself off of the Effexor little by little, and supplimenting with the St. John's Wort, and so far, it has been very successful.

I have heard that taking an anti-depressant and St Johns wort at the same time is typically not reccomended. The reason for this is that St Johns wort is effective (in some cases) because it works on the same neurotransmitters as anti-depressants. So taking both together could have funny effects.

I don't think the drug companies would want to test the effectiveness of St Johns wort - given that their medications make them money and all. So they would probably say that interaction may occur and that hasn't been tested so they would advise against it...

MAOIs and sjw cannot go together. Potentially deadly.

It doesn't mix well with Paxil. Intense sedation, easy to overdo it.

Yes, you can take sjw with antidepressants, except for the maois. Be educated on how to spot early signs of serotonin syndrome. Just start with super low dosing, like splitting a pill into halves or quarters and dosing just once a day, and proceed modestly from there.

Start with a brand that is the same as in many of the clinical studies. That is LI160 formula, Kira brand.

Brands can be as different from one another as SSRIs are different from one another. So if one brand doesn't help, it's worth trying a couple others for a couple weeks each. Natures Way Perika is another good one also used in clinical studies.

I like Kira LI160, along with a little bit of prozac and zyprexa. The drugs keep me stable and non-depressed, but blaw. Sjw gets rid of the blawness, probably due to its norepinephrine and dopamine action. It is also, for me, pro-sexual, pro-urinary, anti-virus, anti-bacteria, and has caused infected boils in my seating area to clear up and disappear.

No. You can get seratonin overload, which is at best annoying, and at worst will land you in the hospital.
