Bright Light Therapy?

Posted by Racer on December 15, 2005, at 14:49:18

Can anyone tell me about experiences with this? My T just 'prescribed' it for me, I do think it's very likely to help, but I still wonder.

Of course, I wonder because I"m so depressed I just want to give up and crawl under furniture...

Thanks!

It definitely helps me. I aim for 30 minutes a day at around the same time every day. It's best in the early morning, as bright light tends to reset your circadian rhythms (sp?) as bright light is a cue to wake, and your body tends to wake at that time.

I definitely have more energy and feel less depressed when I use it regularly. Last year I started a bit after the first day of fall, and I continued through the beginning of spring. I was not so good with consistent time at first, and this messed my sleep up. I also noticed a recurrence of depression in the Spring after I stopped. I wonder if I should use it throughout the year.

This year, I tend to forget to do it, even if I get up specifically for that purpose. (Duh, I know). So I'm not getting the full benefits. I also am having a very hard time using it on the weekends, as I just don't want to get up that early. So my rule for this year is to try to get the time in before 10:00 a.m., but to really try for about 7:30 a.m. each day.
