Safety of estrogenic herbs ?

Posted by linkadge on April 14, 2007, at 13:07:35

Hi, I am wondering if anyone knows the safety of herbs with phytoestrogenic properties in persons not going through menopause.

I am interested in fo-ti as a MAO-B inhibitor but am concerned about the high level of estrogenic acitivity this herb shows.

Any info would be appreciated.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the herb is known as a male tonic, a treatment for sexual dysfunction and age-related decline. I think a bigger issue is that the product is often adulterated or confused with other Polygonum spp. here in North America. Even the name fo ti was confabulated by an Hawaiian entrepreneur.

I'd consult Chinese herbals, under which it is known as He Shou Wu.
