Rhodiola and Licorice

Posted by Johnnybaklava on September 1, 2011, at 11:12:41

This is so typical: I find something that works, then something happens and I need to discontinue. I tried Licorice Root (450mg) and Rhodiola (240mg) last week. I didn't really notice anything, though my stress levels certainly went down. But, in retrospect, every day I was feeling better and better: more energy, less obsessive, generally happier. But then I started waking up earlier and earlier. Last night was the worst: after 5 hrs. of sleep I was wide awake, head buzzing in that way I remember from when I first started taking Zoloft. Now I don't know about licorice, but I know rhodiola can affect sleep, but I've been taking Gaia's adrenal formula for a year which has 120mgs in it and never had a problem. Now I'm adding 120mg of the Gaia rhodiola on top of that. During the day I don't feel a "buzz," really. And falling asleep isn't really the issue. A little melatonin and I'm out. But the early waking is frustrating and I can't imagine this small dose of rhodiola is the culprit. Maybe a synergistic reaction with the licorice? Maybe it'll resolve: I hope so. I love my days!

Licorice seriously pumps up your blood pressure, which can be uncomfortable to say the least.

Rhodiola can potentiate anything else that stimulates you. It is advised not to take rhodiola in the evening or before sleep. I combine rhodiola with bacopa. I suspect bacopa monnieri helps establish sound sleep. But that's just a hunch.
