It Looks Like Friday for Lamar, thanks to Zen

Posted by shar on August 3, 2005, at 2:13:10

Lamar, my rough coat, tri-color, full-sized Collie (Like Lassie), is going to his maker then. There is no excuse in the world for extending his pain and suffering. I am only waiting until Friday because that will give me the weekend to grieve. And, maybe Monday I can go to class without just being a total mess. (Totally selfish of me.)

Anyhow, the generous Zenhussy, long banished from this site, made it possible for me to give him a good passing. The following poem was what came with Scruffles' ashes after she was cremated. And, I know I am determined to go to Doggie Heaven and greet them both again.

There may be folks in this life that I love, but, they're gonna have to go to D.H. if they want to see me when it's over. Although, I must say, "Master" does not quite fit with my philosophy--I would prefer "friend", but don't want to edit someone else's work.

"Farewell, Master, Yet not farewell.
Where I go, ye too, shall dwell.
I am gone, before your face,
A moment's time, a little space.
When ye come where I have stepped
Ye will wonder why ye wept."

by Edwin Arnold

I guess I can only say "Amen." How he will be missed is incomprehensible.

Blessings to Lamar for all he is, was, and always will be. I am honoured to have met his unique soul.

My heart is with your pack Shar.

Lamar and I are gonna raise hell in Doggie Heaven

Today (Friday) at 2:30 CST (U.S.) time, Lamar went to sleep for the last time. We went to the vet, carried him in wrapped in a special blankie, and the vet and staff were quite kind. His passing was very serene. I think going to the vet, putting him in the car, carrying him into the room, just about took everything he had.

I would say, it took about 10 seconds after the vet started the injection for him to drowse away, and he was gone by the time the injection was done. It was extremely peaceful, serene, with me and my S.O. talking to him and petting him the whole time.

When he was gone, I said "Good, now we can break down." And, we did. It is important not to be weeping and upset when with your pet, because it upsets THEM. So, we just petted him and I told him what a good boy he was, and he was my most handsome guy.

We stayed a few more minutes, giving him kisses good-bye and final pets and pats.

There is a void, and when we got home I told the other dogs Lamar wouldn't be coming back, and picked up his food bowl. The pack order has changed now. In the next few days we will clear out a few other things.

But not today. I had a sweet condolence call from dearest Phil (thank you), and we are lighting candles at home. We also talked about what he meant to us and how he enriched our lives.

The silver lining is that he is now in Doggie Heaven with Scruffles, who will comfort him, and get him used to the place until I arrive. They can play and romp until I arrive, and then we'll all romp together.

It was time, it was the right thing to do, and I figure, when we're all in Doggie Heaven...it'll be a totally different place! I'm planning on raising a LOT of hell, playing fetch, teasing them by PRETENDING to throw the ball, causing all sorts of ruckus and barking, etc.

Lamar, farewell, and I know you're not in pain now, and I'll see you (hopefully) soon.

Thanks, again, Zen for your kindness, and I'm very glad you got to meet him also.

xoxo

Shar,
It sounds like you and Lamar had a wonderful life together. I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm glad you are such a caring and responsible friend to your pets.

Thanks, GG.

Lamar and I had 9 years together (I got him from Collie Rescue). Mostly excellent years, although I think before he was picked up by a good samaritan (he was on the roadside of a major highway) he had some trauma, like maybe being hit by a car or something, but no broken bones, etc. He seemed to have some neurological damage and was deaf in one ear. But, sweet and pure to the core. He won 2nd place in Novice obedience training.

My S.O. always described Lamar like the guy who is always stoned, sauntering up saying "Hey, dudes, what's happening? Is that food I smell?" and things like that. And, it was an excellent and funny description.

He was also a great protector. He protected us from the letter carrier, children walking home from school, kids riding their bikes in front of our house, noisy trucks, etc. Now, if a burgler had just come in the front gate and walked in, Lamar would've been like "Hey, Dude, what's up? Got any food? You probably want to pet me, huh?"

Thanks for your kind condolences.

xoxo

St. Peter greeted Lamar with "hey dude, what's up?"

to which Lamar replied "dude it was time but soon enough my crazy pack will join me again" ...and a hearing, sprightly, healthy Lamar ran off with St. Pete filled with the knowledge of how much he was loved here on earth by you and yours and that he'll be with you all again when the time is right.

Blessings to you all through this time sweetie.

Yes, this made me laugh. Sounds like a great friend. Thanks for sharing this.

I can relate. My dog is the same way. However she is the chief of the squirrel patrol.

Zen,
That's a great image about St. Pete and Lamar.

It's been a long time since I've lost a furbaby. I forgot how much it changes things. Right now we're dogsitting a Golden for a neighbor, so we still have 3, but soon it will be just Shadow and Psycho Dog (well, and Finn the cat).

The house seems emptier, even though we are still a family of 5. When we hand out meds, the line will be shorter. When we cook, we'll only have one big dog to lay in the middle of the kitchen for us to trip over (plus Finn to lay there and grab our feet). We'll almost be able to get through a doorway given our smaller entourage--because, as you know, everyone has to go through at the same time. It'll take a lot of getting used to.

xoxo

Tippy, Henrietta, Smut, J.J., Sister Rose, Cornelius Brothers, Tiger Eyes, Levon, Jose Murdock, Moe, Doc and many others greeted Lamar and helped him check the place out. They are all friends of Scruffles!! xoxo pat

Fayerody--
What a relief it is to know that it's not just Scruffle's job! She has compadres to romp with, and Lamar does, too.

So, now, I say through tears, "you're gonna learn something."

Faye--while I'm typing this my psycho dog did a 'song.' That's where he (a spaniel/terrier or something mix that I 'inherited' from my niece) starts howling/wailing/singing/whatever. We do appreciate his music and since Lamar has been gone it's been very infrequent. He's now #2 in the pack, and--tonight, looking into Shad's cloudy eyes...he might be #1 in a short while. Shad is having trouble walking (she is an older gal, and a Lab--75 pounds).

Oh how I hate this part.

It is a relief to know that when she/I/whomever gets there, it's all good.

xoxoxo
